PERSONAL HISTORY AND INTERESTS
Born, January 18 1948 Melbourne, Australia
I have lived in and around Geelong for 30 years, and know the local environment very well.
As a practising artist, I work mainly in ceramic, bronze and paper and found materials too.
I also paint and enjoy using computer arts techniques.
When I get the opportunity, I enjoy working on the large snow sculpting projects (usually overseas)
.
I have a strong interest in Japan – especially their Arts and Design, their Architecture, Zen,
Gardens, Bonsai, etc.. I enjoy going to Japan very much.
I have written a couple of books (neither of them published yet) – a fictional novel and an Art book
– a kind of "Art for Anybody", which is an attempt to "explain" the appreciation and understanding
of the Arts for the average person.
My wife is a jazz singer and Yoga Teacher. Amongst my friends and acquaintances are many
artists, teachers, musicians, writers, photographers and graphic artists and computer animators. I am
pleased that I still hear from many of my ex-students.
I have a high degree of computer literacy. I use Photography and Digital Photographic techniques in
my art work and maintain a web site.
I am an avid reader; I enjoy the works of Jung, Joseph Campbell, Eckhart Tolle and others.
I have been, but am not currently a member of NAVA , The Institute of Art Education, and the
Geelong Arts Council (1991)
.
SWANBAY GALLERY & arQ GALLERY
When I took early retirement from the Gordon TAFE College in 1998, I managed in partnership
with my wife, a small gallery in Queenscliff, Victoria.
We marketed our own artworks and also promoted other local and regional artists.
This successful business involved advertising, banking, book-keeping, promoting, hanging and
curating exhibitions. We were also involved in the local Business and Tourism Association in
Queenscliff for the time we ran our gallery there until 2002.
We are now involved with the Portarlington Business Assoc.
We have since moved to a larger space and have opened arQ Studios & Gallery at Portarlington.
This space also incorporates our studios and work spaces and includes three other artists. There are
two sculptors, a ceramicist and two painter / printmakers. We share the work of keeping the Gallery
open at weekends and holiday periods.
As with Swanbay Gallery, we are primarily concerned with promoting local and regional
artists, as well as ourselves. We are also using the space for workshops and classes for the regional
community, and concerts featuring local and regional musicians.
TEACHING LEGACY
The benefit of my years of teaching experience has given me useful communication and
organisational skills. As a lecturer at Mercy College, I spent a lot of time in Primary schools
supervising my students with their teacher training.
The Gordon TAFE in particular enriched my technical and practical skills enormously. I have been
able to transfer such knowledge to other areas.
I believe that one of my greatest attributes is that I am an extremely good facilitator of
projects. And when I don't know something – I ask !
I have helped fellow artists with exhibitions. I enjoy talking to groups of students who come to our
gallery on excursions. I try to be generous with whatever knowledge I have.
While at the Gordon TAFE, I worked hard to establish the Gordon Gallery.
I have taken young sculptors with me on snow sculpting projects overseas.
I have done some editing work on literary projects for a local writer.
For a time I wrote the "Art Column" for the local newspaper in Queenscliff.
