My name is Lindsay McDougall and I have been painting for over 30 years.
I was born in Coburg, a small inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia. I had a typical Australian upbringing school, plenty of sport, the beach in summer and football in winter. Every Sunday we would visit my grandmother and, while my parents were inside, I would sit on the porch with my cousin and she would show me how to draw Disney characters. Donald Duck, Goofy and Mickey Mouse were my favourites. This is my first memory of having an interest in art.
I dabbled in art until my late 20s, when I decided to get serious. I began formal training with Australian landscape painter Kevin Boucher in his studio in Warrandyte. I undertook additional formal training and had the great opportunity to attend life drawing classes with Yvonne Audette at the Hawthorn Artists Society. Yvonne is a distinguished Australian artist who had her early training Europe and studied under major artists such as Henry Gibbons, John Passmore and Geoffrey Miller. I was eager to learn as much as possible and to find a direction for my art. I was also fortunate enough to have had tuition with noted Australian artists Herman Pekel, Ray Hewitt and Shirley Bourne.
Herman has had a strong influence on my art and has inspired me to work with more focus on the play of darks and lights and the power of darks in my painting style. I also credit the exceptional American artist Alex Powers with my move towards a similar focus and, importantly, a design process that allows me to capture more emotion in my work (particularly my portrait work).
My work is eclectic – I paint landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, still life and portraits. The majority of my work is done in oils. I have also completed larger figurative and portrait works in acrylic with some mixed media, employing charcoal and pastels. Most of my landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes are completed plein air (on-site) with little studio alteration. I feel that this lets more authenticity and emotion into the work. I consider myself very fortunate to have Australia as my artistic playground with its incredible offerings and variety. I hope that my work will take you into my world and the inspirational place that Australia is.
